Points M and N are marked on segment AB so that N lies between points M and B. Find the length of the line AB, if the length of the segment is AN = 42cm, the length of the segment MB = 24cm and MN = 8cm.
The solution of the problem:
Method 1:
1. Let us determine the length of the segment NB.
NB = MB – MN;
NB = 24 – 8 = 16 cm.
2. Determine the length of the segment AB.
AB = AN + NB;
AB = 42 + 16 = 58 cm.
Method 2:
1. Determine the length of the segment AM.
AM = AN – MN;
AM = 42 – 8 = 34 cm.
2. Determine the length of the segment AB.
AB = AM + MB;
AB = 34 + 24 = 58 cm.
Answer: the length of the segment AB is 58 cm.
