Points M and N are marked on segment CD so that point M lies between points C and N. Find the length of the segment ND if CM = 37cm, MN = ycm and CD = 68cm.Simplify the resulting expression and find its value at y = 14 and for y = 23.

The CD segment consists of three smaller segments: CM, MN and ND. Since the segment ND is one of the three parts of the segment CD, we get the following expression:

1) ND = CD – (CM + MN) = CD – CM – MN = 68 cm – 37 cm – y cm

Substitute the y values in the resulting expression:

2) CD1 = 68 cm – 37 cm – 14 cm = 17 (cm) – the length of the CD segment at y = 17.

3) CD1 = 68 cm – 37 cm – 23 cm = 8 (cm) – the length of the CD segment at y = 23.

Answer. With y = 17, the length of the CD segment will be 17 centimeters, and with y = 23 – 8 centimeters.
