Potassium permanganate in an acidic medium oxidizes: benzene; 2-methylbutene-2; toluene; chloroethane; methanol; 1,4-dimethylbenzene. Draw up equations of possible reactions.
Oxidized:
1) 2-methylbutene-2 with the formation of butanone and carbon dioxide
2) toluene to form benzoic acid
3) methanol with the formation of methanal first, then formic acid, then carbon dioxide
4) 1,4-dimethylbenzene with the formation of terephthalic acid
