London was indeed a major trade center. In it one could see a huge port full of ships sailing from all over the world. There were warehouses nearby, in which a variety of goods were stored. It was trade in them that made England a superpower. But London was also very dirty. There was no sewage system in it, and the waste was thrown directly into the street. There was no light in it, and at night there was an impenetrable mud. There were frequent epidemics. And since the police in its modern form did not yet exist, crime flourished.
