The shoot is a stem with leaves and buds located on it. The rhizome is an underground modified shoot, and therefore has all the features of an shoot: nodes in which early dying scaly leaves are located, internodes located between them, apical and axillary buds, as well as adventitious roots. The functions of the rhizome are storage of nutrients, vegetative reproduction and dispersal. The latter is achieved by isolating individual protruding aerial shoots.
