There were noticeably fewer states in the western hemisphere than in the eastern. The most developed were the Incas and Aztecs, they were able to create empires, and there were also the Maya and Chibcha-Muisca, they created confederations of cities and principalities.

The power in the state of the Incas resembled the oriental despotism of antiquity. The ruler was revered as the son of God, the power of the supreme Inca was surrounded by a sacred halo. The deceased ruler was embalmed and kept in a crypt.

In the Aztec empire, distant territories had wide autonomy and paid tribute, power was not inherited, in some ways it was similar to the Holy Roman Empire.
