So the Greek city-states, which had stable agriculture and active trade, soon faced the problem of a shortage of land. The islands of the Mediterranean and the Northern Black Sea coast seemed to the ancient colonialists to be good prey: mild climate, land capable of fertility, convenient sea communication for trade.
