Reinforced concrete slab measuring 4 x 0.3 x 0.25 m is submerged in water at half its volume. What is the strength of Archimedes?
A body immersed in a liquid is acted upon by an Archimedean or buoyant force equal in value to the weight of the liquid displaced by it and directed against the direction of action of the body’s weight, that is, towards, up.
Fout = Vρg, where V is the volume of the body, ρ is the density of the liquid (in our case, water, ρ of water – 1000 kg / m³), g is the acceleration of gravity.
In this case, Fdisplacement is equal to the weight of water displaced by half the volume of the plate. The volume of the slab will be equal to – 4 m * 0.3 m * 0.25 m = 0.3 m³. Half of the volume will be equal to 0.3 / 2 = 0.15 m³.
The buoyancy force acting on the slab, half submerged in water, will be equal to – Fout = 0.15 m³ * 1000 kg / m³ * 9.8 m / s² = 150 * 9.8 kg * m / s² = 1470 N.
