Relations of Russia with China and Japan during the times of Alexander II.

Russia during the reign of Alexander II pursued an active foreign policy. The country’s territory was expanding. At the same time, relations with eastern neighbors – China and Japan – expanded and strengthened. So, in the late 1850s – early 1860s. the Beijing Treaty and the Aigun Treaty with China were signed, according to which the Russian Empire expanded its lands in the east. A few years later, an agreement was reached with Japan, according to which Japan gave Sakhalin to Russia in exchange for the Kuril Islands. This agreement was named St. Petersburg.
