After the discovery of Antarctica and new lands in the Arctic at the beginning of the twentieth century, a real race broke out between polar explorers from different countries and travelers to reach the geographic poles of the planet. The British and Norwegians fought for the title of the discoverer of the South Pole, and the latter won, led by Roald Amundsen (1911). The North Pole has been officially conquered since 1909, when a team of Americans headed by Robert Peary arrived there.
