Reproduction and significance of mosses.

The department of Bryophytes has 25,000 species, in Ukraine – 800 species. Sizes reach from 5 to 45 cm. Roots are absent, their function is performed by rhizoids.
Gametophyte predominates in the reproduction cycle. Gametophyte is a green plant. Fertilization requires water. The sporophyte parasitizes the gametophyte and is a cylindrical peduncle with a capsule (sporangium) at the apex. Spores are formed in the boxes as a result of the reduction division of meiosis. Dispersion of spores is facilitated by the springs of the capsules.
The meaning of mosses:
1. regulate the water regime of the area;
2. swamp soils, accumulating water;
3. form peat;
4. mosses are the first to inhabit an area where other plants cannot grow, increase the amount of humus and thereby prepare the soil for other plants.
5. they grow on rocks, sand.
