Reproduction in annelids is in most cases sexual. To polychaete fertilization is external, development with metamorphosis. In small bristles and leeches, fertilization is internal, and development is direct. Development takes place in a cocoon of mucus. Asexual reproduction is also possible – budding and fragmentation (the process of splitting something into many different fragments).
