Results of the Crusades for Byzantium.

If we are talking about Byzantium, then the crusades can be dated to 1096-1271 and 1096-1444. The fact is that in 1396 and 1444 there were two crusades of European knighthood against the strengthened Ottoman Turks, both ended in complete defeat, they were defeated by the sultans Bayazid I and Murad II.

The first crusade (1096-1099) was relatively beneficial for Byzantium, the Seljuk Turks were weakened by the actions of the crusaders, who marched from the shores of the Sea of Marmara to Antioch.

The second campaign ended with the complete defeat of the crusaders; during the third, the Byzantines chose to stay away.

The fourth crusade led to the capture of Constantinople by the crusaders and the interruption of Byzantine statehood for 57 years, from 1204 to 1261. The Crusaders were able to take control of virtually the entire coast of the Aegean and Marmara Seas (Latin Empire).

As a result, Byzantium was greatly weakened and in 1453 was captured by the Ottoman Turks, and the leading role in trade in this region passed from it to merchants from Genoa and Venice (until the middle of the 15th century).
