As emperor, Charlemagne proved to be a talented diplomat and skillful administrator of the vast territory he controlled. He promoted education and encouraged the Carolingian Revival, a period of renewed emphasis on scholarship and culture. He orchestrated economic and religious reforms and was the driving force behind cartoon miniature, a standardized form of writing that later became the basis for modern European printed alphabets. Charlemagne ruled in a number of cities and palaces, but spent considerable time in Aachen. There was a school in his palace, for which he recruited the best teachers on earth.
