Root characteristics and functions.

The root of a plant is called the vegetative axial, most often the underground part, although there are plants with roots located or protruding above the ground. Roots are of several types: main, lateral and adventitious. The collection of all the roots of a plant is called the root system. Depending on the number and location, several types of root systems are also distinguished.

Plant roots have several functions: 1) the roots help the plant to anchor in the soil or other substrate, thereby holding it in place, 2) the roots are able to absorb water and minerals from the soil and ensure their delivery to other frequent plants, 3) the roots store the necessary for a plant of substances to use them in an unfavorable period, 4) the roots themselves can also synthesize some useful substances from water and other substances, 5) in some plants, the roots perform the function of reproduction, with the help of the so-called root suckers.
