Saliva is made up of many different substances and enzymes. This liquid is 98% water. It also contains digestive enzymes that begin the process of breaking down carbohydrates. Also, it contains lysozymes, which disinfect some hazardous substances. Since the oral cavity is the starting point of the digestive tract, the process of preparing food for further movement through the body takes place there. Therefore, saliva has a viscous substance that helps food to pass more easily through the esophagus.
