Solon’s laws on debt slavery.

Under Solon, debt slavery was abolished. All debts, to the state and to individuals, were forgiven. This was done in order to cope with the plight of the Athenians. Then people were given loans on the security of personal freedom, and for failure to pay on time, the creditor could take the debtor for forced labor, that is, make him a slave. Solon, however, forbade giving loans on the security of freedom, whoever did this was threatened with the death penalty. So Solon prevented the plight of the population in the future.
