Stages of the digestion process in the small intestine.

The process of digesting food in the small intestine takes place in 3 stages:

1) Cavity digestion. As the name implies, it occurs in the gut cavity, while food is digested by digestive juices.

2) Parietal digestion. This stage occurs on the mucous membrane that covers the small intestine. Thus, small food particles are digested.
