The state and Russian society at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century were characterized by the complete disintegration of the intelligentsia, the bourgeoisie and the nobility. Writers and lawyers shouted from the rostrum “Who is the power here? We are the power! ” and sent the Mikado congratulations on the victory in the Russo-Japanese War. Cocaine was sold in every pharmacy and everyone sniffed it – from poets (“poetry of the Silver Age” – this is because of the silver boxes in which cocaine was sold in pharmacies) to officers. The favorite word was “decadence”.
