Suggest three ways to get iron from Fe2O3 iron ore using different reducing agents.
February 13, 2021 | education
| Iron is obtained from iron ore by reduction. In this case, iron ions with an oxidation state of +3, accepting electrons, are reduced to iron atoms. Coal (C), bivalent carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen (H2) are used as reducing agents in industry. Also, there is a method of aluminothermy, where aluminum is used as a reducing agent. The reactions proceed according to the following equations:
a) 2 Fe2O3 + 3 C = 2 Fe +3 CO2;
b) Fe2O3 +3 CO = 2 Fe + 3 CO2;
c) Fe2O3 +3 H2 = 2 Fe + 3 H2O;
e) Fe2O3 +2 Al = 2 Fe + Al2O3.
