Supporters of the unification of Italy were the bourgeoisie, the Savoyard-Sardinian nobility (which by that time was actively entering into capitalist relations, turning into the bourgeoisie), the urban population, residents of the Habsburg possessions, and radicals.

Opponents were local elites, some ruling houses, and henchmen of foreign invaders.

At one time, the clergy advocated unification, but after the events of 1848, they began to seek to maintain the status quo.
