In 1641, a contradiction arose between parliament and the king, which was associated with who would lead the army. Karl, of course, demanded that the army be put into his hands, but parliament denied it. The king then issued a decree arresting five members of parliament. But they managed to escape. After the failure of the arrest attempt, the king realized that a civil war was inevitable and went to York in order to gather his army and strike at parliament.
