Athens was one of the most ancient and powerful cities. They began to develop in the 9th-8th century BC. At the beginning of the 6th century BC, democracy appears in Athens. In the middle of the 5th century BC, after the victory over Persia, Athens were able to achieve their highest power and authority. They were essentially the center of all of Greece. At the same time, its democracy flourished under Pericles. But at the end of the 5th century BC, Athens fell into decay. In the middle of the 4th century BC, most of Greece, including Athens, fell under the rule of Macedonia.
