Tell us about the travels of Christopher Columbus? Why did not his contemporaries appreciate the significance of his discoveries during Columbus’s life? How did it happen that the mainland discovered by Columbus became known as America?
Christopher Columbus was an outstanding navigator. In 1492, he set out on the first sea expedition, which was intended to open a sea route to India. At that time, he was able to swim to the mainland, which he took for the lands of India. Even the local population was nicknamed the Indians. At the same time, another navigator – Vasco da Gama in 1498 was able to open a truly trade route to India. In this connection, Columbus was recognized as a charlatan and even imprisoned. But all the other navigator, Amerigo Vespucci, proved the existence of a new land, in connection with which the new continent was named America.
