The area of the trapezoid is 320 cm2. A height = 8 cm. Find the bases of the trapezoid if the length of one of the bases is 60% of the length of the other.

We find the bases of the trapezoid from the formula:

S = ½ (a + b) h,

Where:

S – area;

a and b – the base of the trapezoid;

h is the height of the trapezoid.

a + b = S / (½h) = 320 / (1/2 x 8) = 320/4 = 80 cm;

Let a – x cm,

Then b = 0.6x.

We get:

X + 0.6x = 80;

1.6x = 80;

x = 80 / 1.6;

x = 80 / 1.6;

x = 50;

a = 50 cm – the base of the trapezoid;

b = 0.6 x 50 = 30 cm – the base of the trapezoid.

We check: a + b = 50 + 30 = 80 cm.
