| The boat sways on waves propagating at a speed of 2.5 m / s. Determine the period of vibration of the boat if the distance between the nearest wave crests is 8m.
Given:
u = 2.5 meters per second – the speed of propagation of waves on which the boat is swinging;
l = 8 meters – the distance between the nearest wave crests (wavelength).
It is required to determine T (seconds) – the period of wave oscillations.
To determine the period of wave oscillations, you must use the following formula:
u = l / T, from here we find:
T = l / u = 8 / 2.5 = 80/25 = 3.2 seconds.
Answer: the period of vibration of the boat is 3.2 seconds.
