The coordinates of the ball moving on a flat surface at the start and end points are respectively x1 = 1m

The coordinates of the ball moving on a flat surface at the start and end points are respectively x1 = 1m, y1 = 1m and x2 = 4m, y2 = 5m. Determine the modulus of movement of the ball.

Given:

x1 = 1 meter – the initial coordinate of the ball along the X axis;

x2 = 4 meters – the final coordinate of the ball along the X axis;

y1 = 1 meter – the initial coordinate of the ball along the Y-axis;

y2 = 5 meters – the final coordinate of the ball along the y-axis.

Find the module for moving the ball S (meter).

Let’s find the module of movement along the X axis:

Sx = x2 – x1 = 4 -1 = 3 meters.

Find the module of displacement along the Y-axis:

Sy = y2 – y1 = 5 – 1 = 4 meters.

Then, the module of movement will be equal to:

S = (Sx ^ 2 + Sy ^ 2) ^ 0.5 = (3 ^ 2 + 4 ^ 2) ^ 0.5 = (9 + 16) ^ 0.5 = 25 ^ 0.5 = 5 meters.

Answer: the module of movement of the ball is 5 meters.
