| The decomposition of natural gas (methane) produces soot and hydrogen. Calculate the volume of hydrogen that can be obtained from the decomposition of 12 liters of methane (CH4): CH4-C + 2H2
To solve, we write down data on the condition of the problem:
CH4 = C + 2H2 – decomposition of methane, hydrogen and soot are released.
Proportions:
1 mol of gas at normal level – 22.4 liters;
X mol (CH4) -12 L from here, X mol (CH4) = 1 * 12 / 22.4 = 0.5 mol;
0.5 mol (CH4) – X mol (H2);
-1 mol -2 mol hence, X mol (H2) = 0.5 * 2/1 = 1 mol.
We find the volume of the gaseous product:
V (H2) = 1 * 22.4 = 22.4 L
Answer: in the process of decomposition, hydrogen was obtained with a volume of 22.4 liters.
