The 17th century was the time of palace coups. This is the result of endless intrigues of the boyars close to the throne and the guards who have strengthened their influence. Only because of this, for the entire century, rulers – usurpers sat on the Russian throne.

Palace coups were accompanied by violence, murder, and each new ruler who ascended the throne nominated his adherents to government and military positions. Many of whom did not serve the fatherland, but lobbied for their own interests. All this was reflected in the politics and economy of the state.

The result of the palace coups was the strengthening of the autocratic power, the strengthening of serfdom. The growing power of the army, on which all subsequent rulers of Russia relied.
