The height of a rectangular parallelepiped is 18 cm. What will be the height if, with an Unchanged volume, the area of the parallelepiped’s base: 1. increase by 9 times; 2. Reduce by 5 times?
Let us denote the area of the base of the rectangular parallelepiped as s, then at a height of 18 cm its volume will be equal to 18 cm * s.
1) If you increase the area by 9 times, then it will be equal to 9 * s. We write the new value of the height as x, then the volume will be x * 9 * s. Since the volumes are equal, we write down the equation.
x * 9 * s = 18 cm * s.
x = 18 cm * s ÷ 9 ÷ s.
x = 2 cm.
2) If we reduce the area by 5 times, then the volume will be equal to x * s ÷ 5. Then.
x * s ÷ 5 = 18 cm * s.
x = 18 cm * s ÷ s * 5.
x = 90 cm.
Answer: 1) 2 cm, 2) 90 cm.
