The historical significance of the unification of Italy.

The unification of Italy, which was fully completed in 1870, had historical consequences. First of all, Italy became a nation state, which included the Pantificate-papal region. The constitutional monarchy became the state system of Italy. As a result of the unification, Italy received a Constitution and a single Parliament. The unification of the country resulted in the formation of a single national market. The development of Italian industry took place, albeit at a slower pace than in other European countries. A surplus of cheap labor and a huge number of landless peasants led to the formation of the first socialist and farm laborers’ associations. The first strikes took place in the 1870s.
