In ancient Rome, slaves were equated with livestock in terms of their status.

They were used in the most difficult and dangerous jobs, especially in mines.

Every large farm used slave labor. They worked the fields, grazed cattle.

The life and well-being of the slave was completely dependent on the whim of the master.

The position of educated slaves, whose knowledge and skills could be applied in construction, in the office, in schools, was somewhat better.

They also used slaves in gladiatorial games, specially training them. Having won, the slave could get freedom.
