What was the relationship of the Eastern Slavs with their neighbors?

Most of the neighbors of the Eastern Slavs were quite peaceful peoples and cultural and trade interaction was established between them. The exception was the southern steppe neighbors, for example, the Khazar Kaganate. The nomads made constant raids on the Slavs and relations with them were hostile.
