The length of a broken line consisting of three links is 15 cm. The length of one link is 4 cm. Find the lengths of the other two links if one of them is 1 cm shorter than the other.

The task:
broken line length – 15 centimeters,
the first link is 4 centimeters,
second link -? centimeters,
the third link -?, 1 centimeter more than the second link.
Decision:
1) we take the length of the second link for x, then x + 1 is the length of the third link. Let’s make an equation and determine the value of x:
4 + x + (x + 1) = 15,
5 + 2 x = 15,
2 x = 15 – 5,
x = 10: 2,
x = 5 centimeters.
2) calculate the length of the third link:
x + 1 = 5 + 1 = 6 centimeters.
Check: 4 + 5 + 6 = 15.
Answer: the length of the 2nd link is 5 centimeters, the third is 6 centimeters.
