The length of one segment is 50cm and the length of the other is 1dm. How many centimeters is the first segment longer? How many times?
1 dm = 10 cm.
So the length of the second segment is 10 cm.
We find out how many centimeters the first segment is longer than the second, for this we subtract the length of the second from its length:
50 – 10 = 40 cm.
We find out how many times the first segment is longer than the second, for this we divide its length by the length of the second:
50: 10 = 5 times.
Answer: the first segment is 40 cm longer than the second and 5 times longer.
