The perimeter of any rectangle is twice the sum of the length and width of that rectangle.

According to the condition of the problem, the length of this rectangle is 8 cm and the width of this rectangle is 4 cm, therefore, the perimeter p of this rectangle is:

p = 2 * (8 + 4) = 2 * 12 = 24 cm.

By the condition of the problem, the perimeter of the square is equal to the perimeter of the given rectangle, therefore, the perimeter of the square is 24 cm.

Find the length of the side of the square.

Let us denote it by x.

Since the perimeter of any square is equal to the side length of this square multiplied by 4, we can write the following equation:

4 * x = 24.

We solve the resulting equation and find the length of the side of the square:

x = 24/4;

x = 6 cm.

Answer: the length of the side of the square is 6 cm.
