The length of the rectangular field is 500 m longer than its width. The farmer, walking at the same speed, walk the field along its length in 40 minutes, and across the field in 30 minutes. What is the area of this field.
1) Find the length and width of the field.
Let’s designate the field width as “x”. Then its length will be “x + 500”.
Based on the time it takes a farmer to travel through the field, width is to length as 30 to 40.
Let’s make the equation:
x / (x + 500) = 30/40;
x = 30 (x + 500) / 40;
4x = 3x + 1500;
x = 1500;
Field width 1500m, length 1500m + 500m = 2000m.
2) Find the area of the field: 1500m * 2000m = 3000000m2
3) In 1 are 100m2, which means the area of the field is 3000000/100 ar = 30000 ar
In 1 hectare there are 10,000 m2, which means that the field area is 3,000,000/10000 ha = 300 ha.
