The length of the segment CD = 49 cm. Points K and L lie on this segment, and point K is located between points C and L. Find the length of the segment KL if; a) CK = 18 cm, LD = 23 cm; b) СL = 40 cm, KD = 35 cm.

This task is for the correct location of points on a segment, according to the condition of the task. Condition: points K and L are located on the segment CD, and point K is located on the segment CL. Schematically, it looks like this:

a) CK = 18 cm, LD = 23 cm.According to the drawing, the segment KL = CD – CK – LD = 49 cm – 18 cm – 23 cm = 8 cm.

b) СL = 40 cm, KD = 35 cm. We look at the drawing and find the required segment KL = CL – CK = KD – LD = CD; CL + KD = CD + KL, whence we find that KL = CL + KD – CD = 40 cm + 35 cm – 49 cm = 75 cm – 49 cm = 36 cm.
