The length of the three segments is 42 cm. The length of the first is 3 times longer than the length of the second, and the length of the third is 2 cm longer than the second.

1. Let’s say that the length of the second segment is x cm.

2. Since, according to the condition of the problem, the first segment has a length 3 times greater than the length of the second, therefore it is equal to 3 * x cm.

3. And since the length of the third segment is 2 cm longer than the length of the second, then it is equal to x + 2 cm.

4. Let’s write down the equation and calculate the length of the second segment if the sum of the lengths of all three segments is 42 cm.

x + 3 * x + x + 2 = 42;

5 * x = 42 – 2;

5 * x = 40;

x = 40/5;

x = 8 cm.

5. Find out the length of the second segment.

8 * 3 = 24 cm.
