Schoolchildren were forced to write essays on a military theme; in the courtyard, boys played war. Everyone wanted to show themselves as the best patriot. In Britain, the Germans had a hard time, they were suspected of espionage, they were severely punished for the presence of carrier pigeons. Germany forbade the use of English in conversations; in Russia, conversations and street signs in German were forbidden. Tension reigned everywhere.
