The mass of one puppy and a kitten together is 8 kg, and the mass of three such puppies and two kittens is ~ 22 kg. Find the mass of one kitten and the mass of one puppy.

Let a be the weight of one puppy and b the weight of one kitten.

The weight of one puppy and one kitten is 8 kg: a + b = 8.

The weight of three such puppies and two kittens is 22 kg: 3a + 2b = 22.

The result is a system of equations:

a + b = 8;

3a + 2b = 22.

Let’s solve the system by the addition method. First, let’s multiply the first equation by (-2): -2a – 2b = -16.

Add the right and left sides of the equations:

-2a – 2b + 3a + 2b = -16 + 22.

a = 6 (kg) – weighs one puppy.

a + b = 8; b = 8 – a; b = 8 – 6 = 2 (kg) – one kitten weighs.

Answer: the weight of one kitten is 2 kg, and that of one puppy is 6 kg.
