The moisture content of the freshly cut grass was 70%. How many kg of hay with a moisture content of 20% will be obtained from 6 tons of this grass?

In problems of moisture loss, it is necessary to calculate not by liquid (water), but by the residue (dry matter). Since it is the mass of dry matter that does not change.

We know the weight of fresh grass – 6,000 kg, according to the condition – moisture – 70%, which means dry matter in fresh grass – 30% = 0.3:

1) 6,000 • 0.3 = 1,800 (kg) – dry matter in fresh grass and hay.

Further, we know that there is 20% moisture in hay, that is, 80% = 0.8 dry matter, and this is 1800 kg:

2) 1800: 0.8 = 2250 (kg) – hay.

Answer: 2 250 kg.
