| The moment of force acting on the lever is 20 N⋅m. What should be the shoulder of the second force for the lever to be in equilibrium if its value is 10 N?
Given:
P1 = 20 Newton * meter – the moment of some force acting on the lever;
F = 10 Newton – the magnitude of the force acting on the opposite end of the lever.
It is required to determine l (meter) – the arm of the force F.
To determine the shoulder of the second force, you need to use the following formula (leverage rule):
P1 = F * l, from here we find that:
l = P1 / F = 20/10 = 2 meters.
Answer: the shoulder of the second force should be 2 meters.
