The mother divided pears between her sons. To the first she gave half of all the pears and another half of the pear, to the second half of the remainder and another half of the pear, and, finally, to the third, half of the new remainder and another half of the pear. Not a single pear needed to be cut. How many pears did the first son get if the mother distributed all the pears?

We know that my mother gave out all the pears, and each of the three sons received a whole number of pears.

The fact that the third son received half of the remainder of the pears and another half of the pear means that he received only 1 pear, (that is, half from one pear and another half).

Let’s count how many pears were originally.

(((1 + 0.5) * 2) + 0.5) * 2, = (3 + 0.5) * 2 = 7 pears.

Therefore, the first son received:

(7/2) + 0.5 = 3.5 + 0.5 = 4 pears.

* The second son received:

(7 – 4) / 2 + 0.5 = 3/2 + 0.5 = 2 pears.
