| By 1939, only the Soviet Union, the Mongolian People’s Republic and Tuva were socialist, but the latter at the end of 1944 became part of the USSR. Three Asian countries became socialist – North Korea (from 1948), China (from 1949), and North Vietnam (finally from 1954, after the end of the war with France). In Europe, there were more socialist countries – Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Albania, Yugoslavia, Poland, Czechoslovakia and the German Democratic Republic since October 1949.
