One of the oldest human occupations in the Stone Age, along with hunting, was gathering. It was this type of activity that allowed a person to obtain plant food.
Basically, women were engaged in gathering. And if the hunt was not always successful, the collection of roots, herbs, berries provided the tribe with constant food. Perhaps this was one of the factors in the advancement of women to leading positions in the human community, and the emergence of matriarchy.
