The part of the city where merchants and craftsmen settled was called in the 17th century.

This part of the city was called posad. Most often, the posad were located outside the boyar, princely or church settlement, which was protected by fortress walls. The part of the city with which it “grew” was also called the posad. True, the settlement itself was not protected by the city walls, which made it vulnerable to enemy raids. Thus, the inhabitants of such areas had to destroy this part of the city and flee outside the walls of the fortress, if there was room for them.
