The pendulum makes 20 complete oscillations in 5 seconds. what is the period and frequency of oscillations of the pendulum
The time during which the pendulum makes one oscillatory movement (say, starting from the extreme position, it returns back from where it began its movement) is called the period of its oscillations.
The formula that determines this value looks like this:
Τ = t / N,
where Τ is the period of oscillations, N is the number of perfect oscillations, t is the time,
for which these hesitations were committed. In our case, the period of swing of the pendulum will be equal to –
Τ = 5 s / 20 = 0.25 s.
The oscillation frequency is related to the period by a simple relationship –
ν = 1 / Τ,
where ν is the vibration frequency (unit of measurement – Hz (hertz)). That is, the frequency is “inverse” to the period: it indicates the number of oscillations per unit of time.
We have ν = 1 / 0.25 s = 4 Hz.
Thus, we have found the required values of our task:
Τ (period) = 0.25 s; ν (frequency) = 4 Hz.
