| 1. Let us denote the length of the side of the square by X cm.
2. Then the perimeter of the square P, which is equal to the sum of the lengths of the sides of the square, is determined by the expression: P = 4 * X.
3. Let’s compose an equation in accordance with the condition of the problem: P = X + 48 (the perimeter is 48 cm larger than the side).
4. Substitute the expression for P. We get: 4 * X = X + 48. Or 3 * X = 48.
5. Divide both sides of the equation by 3. We get X = 48/3 = 16 cm.
Answer: the length of the side of the square is 16 cm.
