The perimeter of a triangle is calculated as the sum of all its sides. The perimeter of an isosceles triangle is equal to the sum of the lengths of the base and twice the lateral side, since its two sides are equal in length.
Knowing the perimeter of the triangle, as well as the length of its lateral side, we find the length of the base of this triangle.
P (perimeter) = a + 2b, where a is the base, b is the side.
Thus, a = P – 2b, a = 12 – 2 * 5 = 2 cm.
